To help facilitate the closure of one aging elementary school, the Town of Smithfield engaged DBVW to design additions and renovations to three other elementary school buildings. Improvements include reimagining educational spaces to better serve students, addressing safety and maintenance concerns, providing secure entrances, creating additional classroom and learning spaces, and addressing accessibility improvements at all facilities. The largest elementary school will also receive cafeteria / kitchen renovations, and a new gymnasium.
In accordance with the Rhode Island Department of Education Schools Building Authority standards, Stage IV construction is slated to begin in Spring 2020 through Fall 2021. Construction will be phased to work around the occupied schools in both the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 school years.
When completed, elementary schools will have a combined capacity to serve over 1,200 students from Pre-K through Fifth Grade.
