Smithfield Elementary Schools Supergraphics

To facilitate the closure of an aging elementary school, the Town of Smithfield engaged DBVW to design additions and renovations to three elementary school buildings. Improvements included reimagining educational spaces to better serve students, addressing safety and maintenance concerns, providing secure entrances, creating additional classroom and learning spaces, and accessibility improvements at all facilities. In addition, improvements to the largest elementary school included renovations to the cafeteria / kitchen and a new gymnasium. In accordance with the Rhode Island Department of Education Schools Building Authority standards, DBVW produced construction/bid documents for Stage III approval. Stage IV construction began in Spring 2020 and was completed in September 2021. Construction was phased to work around the fully occupied schools in both the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 school years. The elementary schools now have a combined capacity to serve over 1,200 students from Pre-K through Fifth Grade.
