DBVW Architects was commissioned to design a family retreat, with a focus on sustainable features, in coastal Rhode Island. The owners established a “net-zero” energy goal for the home. The existing house on the site was dismantled but the wood beams, framing, flooring, paneling, stone and even doorknobs and other hardware, were carefully set aside for re-use in the new residence. Rainwater is collected in an original stone well on the property for site irrigation, and native species were selected for landscaping.
