The new corporate headquarters for UNFI transforms an underutilized office space next to Providence’s central train station into a warm, flexible, and sustainable workplace. Strategically located near Amtrak and commuter rail lines, the site underscores the company’s commitment to accessibility and sustainable de-sign, with direct connections to Boston, New York, and the Providence airport. The renovation accommodates executive offices, open and floating workspaces, numerous conference rooms, a boardroom, a video studio, and welcoming public areas. Designed for a post-pandemic work-force, the headquarters is scaled for evolving needs while supporting mobility, collaboration, and board-level functions. Perimeter offices and conference rooms maximize daylight, while core spaces house storage and well-ness rooms. Demountable partitions allow light to penetrate the building’s center, creating a bright, con-nected environment. Acoustic treatments balance openness and privacy, and natural wood finishes, greenery, and residential-style elements foster a calming atmosphere. Sustainable strategies included reusing existing systems, renovating rather than building new, and aligning the office with major public transit.
