Waterfire Arts Center

An exciting addition to the Valley Street cultural district, this newly restored mill building consolidates the once scattered WaterFire Providence’s operations and serves as a social enterprise venture benefiting the larger arts community. While a transformative project, the adaptive reuse approach favored light-handed design. Patina and existing painted bricks were kept intact, and new design details were added only as necessary for functionality. To create an area for administrative offices, a second level was created by suspending steel off one of two original gantry cranes. The flexibility of the space allows for the organization’s varied programming as well as community partnerships.
